Urban Soul Guitarist/Vocalist “John Carey and Pianist/Vocalist “Theo Coakley “The Smooth Brothers” are incomparable. Known for their musical versatility and their effortless talents, this dynamic band has won the hearts of many Desert locals.
“The Smooth Brothers” have a wide spread range of over one thousand songs within their repertoire ranging Sinatra to Santana, and are equally fronted by all members on their instruments and vocal harmonies. They are known for playing music that reminds listeners of the good old days of Soul, Jazz, Latin, Blues, and the Motown era. They have opened for many well nationally recognized recording artists such as Norman Brown, Michael Paulo, Warren Hill, Dave Koz, Craig Chaquico, Guitar and Saxes, Buddy Guy, Paul Brown and many others.
South side Chicago native John Carey, has performed all over the Nation with just about everyone on the R & B and jazz circuit including but certainly not limited to Tyrone Davis, Koko Taylor and the world famous Chi-lites. Because of his Chicago bluesy soulful sound and his innate ability to captivate audiences with his complex guitar tricks many fans have compared him to the likes of guitar superstars, Jimi Hendix, Norman Brown, Chuck Loeb, Larry Carlton, and George Benson.
Along John’s musical journey, he has written , composed, recorded and produced 5 independently released CD’s, published a children’s book and Co-wrote, directed and produced his own gospel stage play. He also produced celebrity basketball games, fashion shows, local talent shows and major events such as the Funk Festival and The Inland Empire Black Music Awards. In 2007, he taught music to children for the Boys and Girls Club of America. He has also opened for many musical phenomenon’s such as Natalie Cole, George Benson, Earth Wind and Fire, Ledisi, Warren Hill, Queen Latifah, Brian Culbertson, Boney James, Mindi Abair, Norman Brown, Al Jarreau, Buddy Guy, Gerald Albright and Others.
Theophilus Coakley was born and raised in the Bahamas. He has been playing piano fluently since childhood. In the early 70’s he put together his very own dream group (T-Connection). Later he recorded and performed his own original material on the neighboring islands. Through his determination, he pursued a recording contract with T.K Records in Miami and “Do What You Wanna Do” became a instant success. Soon after, he signed a three album deal with Capitol Records and recoded another billboard success “Best of my Love”. Both John Carey and Theophilus Coakly are releasing their own separate CD’s this year. Urban Soul Guitarist John Carey new CD entitled “New Beginning” will be officially released May 1, 2011 and Theo’s CD will follow soon after.
